England beat France 6-4 in a historic third-place playoff on Saturday, surviving a remarkable second-half comeback to secure the bronze medal at the World Cup.

Inspired by Bukayo Saka's hat trick, the victory marks the Three Lions' best tournament finish since 1966.

Thomas Tuchel's side dominated the opening half, exposing France's shaky defence to race into a 4-0 lead by halftime. Declan Rice and Ezri Konsa scored early before Saka struck twice in quick succession.

Seeking a response in his final match after 14 years in charge, France coach Didier Deschamps made four halftime substitutions.

The changes had an immediate impact. Just three minutes after the restart, Kylian Mbappé finished off a pass from Michael Olise before setting up Bradley Barcola moments later to cut the deficit.

Mbappé then struck again to bring France within one goal.

The brace took Mbappé's World Cup tally to 22 goals, moving him past Lionel Messi as the tournament's all-time leading scorer.

The Real Madrid forward also extended his lead in the Golden Boot race ahead of Sunday's final between Argentina and Spain.

France squandered a golden chance to level the match when Olise fired wide from close range.

England capitalised when Djed Spence was brought down in the box by Malo Gusto, allowing Saka to convert an 87th-minute penalty and complete his hat trick.

Although Ousmane Dembélé responded almost immediately with France's fourth goal, Jude Bellingham sealed the victory in stoppage time, bursting into the box to score England's sixth.

His strike made him the first English player to score seven goals in a single World Cup. The 10-goal thriller became the highest-scoring World Cup match since 1982.

After the match, Tuchel hailed his players' resilience despite falling short of their ultimate goal.

"It is the first medal in 60 years, the best World Cup on foreign soil, so I hope the players can be proud of that in some time," Tuchel said. "Eighteen months ago, we set the highest goal, the highest dream to chase. It is very painful that we missed out. The pain will stay for a while, but the scar will remain."

Tuchel added that he could not praise the performance and mentality highly enough after his team found a way to win despite heavy fatigue and less preparation time than their opponents.

The podium finish offers redemption for Tuchel after facing heavy criticism following England's semifinal defeat to Argentina. The Three Lions now return home with the bronze medal.
