The government has released an additional Sh2 billion for 96,988 metric tonnes of subsidized fertiliser for tea farmers in the 2024/2025 Financial Year.
More than 70,000 smallholders farmers in Murang’a have received certified maize seeds and fertiliser in a bid to increase productivity and turn the county into a food basket.
Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Ronoh has said the fertiliser will be distributed within two weeks and collected at tea trading centers
The agricultural sector rebounded strongly last year influencing the Kenyan economy to grow by 5.6 per cent in that year, compared to the 4.9 per cent growth rate in the previous year.
Until 2020, the report says, Kenya’s consumption of fertiliser was growing peaking at 835,000 tons that year.
During the signing of the agreement, Governor Fernandes Barasa said the partnership is aimed at addressing sustainable waste management.
