Ishiara Level IV Hospital in Mbeere North, Embu County, has come under intense scrutiny following the release of disturbing images detailing severe infrastructural decay and systemic neglect. The revelations sparked public outrage, culminating in a protest on Tuesday that turned deadly.

Leaked photographs showed a facility in advanced disrepair. In several areas, ceilings are on the verge of collapse, exposing wooden rafters and metal roofing.

Widespread moisture stains and rust point to long-term water damage and unresolved leaks.

Inside, rooms are cluttered with stripped metal bed frames and tangled wiring, while toilets appear heavily degraded and stained.

The decay extends to basic medical services.

Patients are reportedly transported on improvised fabric sheets due to a lack of stretchers or wheelchairs.

Sanitation is equally compromised, with makeshift plumbing draining murky water into basins.

The hospital's administrative areas appear disorganised, with medical files and supply boxes for HIV kits piled haphazardly, while linens are hung on outdoor trees to dry due to the lack of laundry facilities.

These dehumanising conditions catalysed the tragic events witnessed in the violent protests at Ishiara town.

Two young men were shot dead on the spot when riot police opened fire on residents protesting the hospital's state.

Several other demonstrators sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to neighbouring facilities, some with bullets still lodged in their bodies.

Following the shootings, angered residents carried the victims' bodies to Ishiara Police Station.

Locals have long complained about the deplorable state of the hospital, specifically citing blocked toilets, dilapidated infrastructure, and the absence of an ambulance.

The protests escalated into running battles that lasted for hours, causing major traffic disruptions as police used live ammunition to repel demonstrators attempting to storm the facility.

While protesters have accused authorities of using excessive force, police blamed 'criminal elements' for hijacking a peaceful demonstration to incite chaos.

“Although the protests began well, what was witnessed soon afterwards was a shocking and unacceptable degeneration into criminal acts and violence by people who were not peaceful protestors. Many businesses were vandalised, and several bystanders were injured in the ensuing mayhem,” the National Police Service said in a statement.

The Embu County Government allocated Sh5.6 billion for the 2025/2026 financial year, with health as a priority sector, yet Ishiara Level IV Hospital faced a specific Auditor General probe in 2025 regarding the effective use of these public resources.
