Award-winning British actor Idris Elba has officially become Sir Idris Elba after receiving a knighthood from King Charles III during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.

The 53-year-old actor, celebrated for his standout performances in the television series The Wire and Luther, was among several notable figures honoured by the monarch on Tuesday.

Elba's knighthood was first announced in King Charles' 2026 New Year Honours List in recognition of his services to young people.

The honour was formally conferred on June 2 when the King touched a ceremonial sword to the actor's shoulders as he knelt before him, completing the centuries-old tradition.

Following the ceremony, Sir Idris shared the milestone with his followers on social media, posting a photograph alongside his wife, Sabrina Elba, taken at Windsor Castle.

"We are thankful. The work continues," he wrote on his Instagram Stories.

The actor received the prestigious recognition for his work through the Elba Hope Foundation, a charity he co-founded with Sabrina in 2022.

The organisation works with communities to combat youth unemployment, expand access to education and help address food insecurity.

Speaking after his inclusion in the New Year Honours List earlier this year, Elba described the recognition as a tremendous honour and expressed pride that his efforts to support young people had been acknowledged.

Images from the investiture ceremony were later shared on the royal family's official social media platforms, congratulating all recipients recognised during the event.

Sir Idris was not the only high-profile figure honoured.

Olympic ice skating legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean received damehood and knighthood honours, respectively, for their contributions to ice skating and voluntary service.

Meanwhile, acclaimed actress and comedian Meera Syal was awarded a damehood in recognition of her contributions to literature, drama and charitable causes.
