Pope Leo XIV has called on football fans watching the 2026 FIFA World Cup to embrace teamwork, compassion and solidarity, using the sport as a lesson for everyday life.

Speaking on X on Wednesday, the pontiff said football demonstrates the importance of working together rather than seeking individual glory.

"Soccer reminds us of something we must not forget; life is not a race to show off on our own, but a path we learn to walk together," Pope Leo said.

"Anyone who does not know how to pass the ball, even if they have talent, has not yet understood the game. Anyone who does not know how to live with and for others has not yet understood life," he added.

The Pope also urged Christians to show compassion and selfless love toward others.

"In addition to being kind and gentle, Christians must be compassionate, love selflessly and seek the good of others, knowing that in every brother and sister who suffers it is the Lord himself who asks and receives, who is welcomed or rejected, loved or despised," he said.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The tournament began on June 11 and will conclude with the final on July 19.

For the first time in the competition's history, 48 teams are taking part, up from the previous 32-team format.

Held every four years, the FIFA World Cup brings together the world's top national teams to compete for football's most prestigious prize. The tournament has produced countless memorable moments, legendary players and dramatic finals that have captivated billions of fans worldwide.

The most recent edition was held in Qatar in 2022, where Lionel Messi inspired Argentina to victory over France in a thrilling final.

Argentina secured their third World Cup title after winning on penalties following a 3-3 draw, ending a 36-year wait for the trophy.

As the 2026 tournament unfolds, fans will be watching to see whether Argentina can successfully defend their title or if a new champion will emerge on football's biggest stage.
