Kisumu's cultural tastemakers take centre stage as AfroExchange returns

Kisumu's growing influence as a centre of culture, entertainment and creative enterprise was on full display over the weekend as AfroExchange event returned to the lakeside city, drawing together musicians, visual artists, DJs and young creatives in a celebration of African culture.

The event held at Berlin Lounge 042, was less about nightlife and more about the growing ecosystem of cultural tastemakers shaping conversations around music, identity and creativity in Kenya's western region.

At the centre of the evening was a carefully curated mix of music and visual art that showcased both established and emerging creative voices.

DJs Detrix and Most Wanted set the tone with performances that moved seamlessly across African sounds and contemporary hits, creating a soundtrack that reflected the continent's evolving musical landscape.

The night's biggest reception, however, belonged to singer Okello Max, whose work has become synonymous with the modern interpretation of Dholuo culture.

His arrival on stage sparked excitement among fans, many of whom sang along to popular tracks such as Taya, Diana and Nakufa.

Visual artists occupied the same space as musicians, while interactive installations transformed sections of the venue into exhibition areas.

One of the evening's most memorable moments came when Okello Max was presented with a hand-drawn portrait created by an emerging artist from the region, symbolising the growing collaboration between musicians and visual creatives.

According to Duncan Mokaya, Shopper Manager at Johnnie Walker, the brains behind the event,  AfroExchange was designed to create those intersections.

"We have always stood for progress and the people who keep moving culture forward. AfroExchange reflects our commitment to championing African creativity by creating spaces where music, art and culture intersect. Through this platform, we celebrate the creators, innovators and cultural tastemakers who are shaping modern Africa while inspiring consumers to take bold steps in pursuit of their passions," he said.

His remarks echoed a conversation taking place across the entertainment industry, where creators are increasingly being recognised not only as performers but also as drivers of economic activity and cultural influence.

The atmosphere throughout the evening saw guests moving between live performances, artistic showcases and experiential spaces that celebrated local creativity while encouraging collaboration and cultural exchange.

For Kisumu, the return of AfroExchange also reinforced the city's growing reputation as a destination for contemporary culture.
