Beyonce reveals touching reason Jay-Z grew his hair for nearly a decade

Beyoncé has given fans a rare glimpse into her family life, revealing that Jay-Z’s now-famous hair transformation was inspired by a deeply personal effort to help their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, embrace her natural hair.

In a diary-style video documenting the six-day process of combing out the rapper’s eight-year-old locs, the singer explained that the decision to grow his hair was never merely a fashion statement.

Reflecting on Blue Ivy’s childhood, Beyoncé said her daughter struggled with confidence about her hair when she was younger.

“Our daughter was about five, and she wasn’t feeling very confident about her hair at that time,” Beyoncé said. “When she told her father that, it inspired Jay to grow out his hair.”

The Grammy-winning star said the family wanted Blue to see herself reflected in her father and learn to appreciate her natural curls.

“We really wanted her to love and embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls,” Beyoncé added.

According to the singer, Jay-Z’s decision had a lasting impact on their daughter, inspiring projects that celebrated Black hair and beauty. Beyoncé said it influenced Blue’s involvement in the award-winning book Hair Love and songs such as Formation, Brown Skin Girl and Baby Hair & Afros.

“The five-year-old Blue had no idea that her father’s hair had texture like hers,” Beyoncé said. “Beautiful.”

The video also revealed another emotional reason behind Jay-Z’s decision to debut his new afro. Beyoncé disclosed that the rapper had initially planned the transformation to honour his late father ahead of an appearance at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia.

“Jay told me a few months ago he was planning on combing out his locks for the Philly show with the Roots,” she said. “He wanted to do this in honour of his father.”

She explained that Jay-Z’s father was a fan of Philadelphia sports teams and often wore an afro, making the hairstyle a fitting tribute.

Despite initially doubting whether his thick, long locs could be successfully combed out after more than eight years, Beyoncé praised her husband’s dedication to hair care throughout the process.

“Jay took better care of his hair than anyone I know,” she said. “He gets his hair washed religiously.”

After days of detangling, conditioning and careful styling, Beyoncé said the transformation was complete.

Thanking her husband for trusting her haircare brand, she concluded with a fitting tribute, “He is forever the blueprint.”
