Suicidal police officer charged after shooting colleague inside Jogoo police station

A police officer who allegedly shot his colleague inside Jogoo Police Station has been charged with causing grievous harm.

Daniel Lokidongoi is accused of committing the crime on the eve of September 4, 2025 against Cliff Nyanumba.

On that day, the accused was on duty. He was issued with an AK47, loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. He and two others had been assigned to oversee a demolition within Uhuru market. They were to ensure peace and order during the demolition.

At around 6pm, the accused is said to have got himself drunk, went to a shop, cocked his rifle and threatened to shoot the shopkeeper if she didn't give him money.

The woman managed to escape and rushed to the police station and made a complaint of the officer's misconduct. This prompted OCS Caroline Njuguna to summon him to the office.

When he appeared before his boss, Lokindongoi was very drunk and allegedly threatened to kill her. He demanded to know why she had summoned him. He then allegedly turned the riffle on himself, and threatened to kill himself.

But OCS Njuguna managed to calm him down. The accused then left her office while still threatening to take his own life.

He then went to crime office and the OCS called for reinforcement from other colleagues. That was when officer Nyanumba in company of others followed him to the anti-crime office.

Nyanumba begged him to stop what he was about to do. He then moved closer to in an attempt to calm him down and tried to take away the riffle.

That's when a gunshot was heard and Nyanumba's left hand started to bleed. A bullet also grazed the back of his head. He was rushed to Komarock Hospital.

Lokindongoi was locked in the cells awaiting processing. The AK-47, one spent cartridge and two bullet heads were recovered and kept as exhibits.

He was later presented before Makadara Chief magistrate Kennedy Bidali who granted him a bond of Sh200,000 pending mention on October 9, 2025.
