Rider in trouble for biting a police officer over number plate check

Incidents of members of the public assaulting and injuring law enforcement officers in the course of their duty have become increasingly common in parts of the capital city.

Two recent cases, one in Starehe and another in Embakasi, highlight the worrying trend.

Sultan Bashir Dadafi appeared before magistrate Renee Kitagwa, denying charges of resisting arrest and biting Police Constable Stephen Nyamu on the right leg. The incident occurred on May 8, 2026, at around 9pm near BBS Mall in Starehe Sub-County.

According to the prosecution, Dadafi was riding a motorcycle without a number plate when he was stopped by police officers. He failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the missing plate and was asked to accompany the officers to the police station.

He allegedly turned violent, resisted arrest, and bit Nyamu on the leg, causing injury before  inciting members of the public against the offi erFellow officers from the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) intervened to restrain him.

Dadafi denied the allegations. The court granted him cash bail of Sh50,000 pending hearing.

In Embakasi, two women, Hildah Adhiambo and Christabel Kisalago Mbutha are accused of repeatedly assaulting a female police officer identified as K.W, including an incident in the presence of her husband.

Adhiambo had previously been employed at a hotel run by the complainant. Their relationship reportedly soured after the accused's mobile phone went missing at the workplace. Adhiambo accused her former employer of involvement in the disappearance.

Although she voluntarily resigned, Adhiambo allegedly continued visiting the hotel to cause disturbances. She blocked the entrance and shouted at former colleagues, insisting she would not leave until her phone was returned.

On one occasion, the complainant was forced to intervene. Adhiambo reportedly became aggressive and accused her of mistreatment before leaving upon the arrival of reinforcements.

On April 30, 2026, Adhiambo and Kisalago encountered the complainant and her husband at a grocery store. The complainant was from work when the two women allegedly began filming the couple without consent, sparking a confrontation. A scuffle ensued during which two attacked the policewoman, injuring her before her husband could intervene.

The suspects were arrested and charged. The prosecution told the court that the duo had repeatedly and contemptuously assaulted the officer. They were released on cash bail of Sh20,000 each, pending hearing in July 29.
