Comedian and activist Eric Omondi was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in connection with alleged criminal offences linked to recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi.

According to a statement issued by the DCI, Omondi was arrested on Friday, June 5, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) following what investigators described as “credible intelligence.”

The DCI alleges that Omondi’s arrest is connected to offences allegedly committed “under the guise of the recent fuel-related protests.”

The agency further noted that several other suspects linked to the same incidents have already been arrested and arraigned in court, warning that it will take firm action against anyone found to have engaged in unlawful conduct during demonstrations.

“The Constitution guarantees the right to assemble, picket, and demonstrate peacefully, but these rights must be exercised responsibly and within the law,” the DCI said, adding that it would “not hesitate to take decisive action” against offenders.

The arrest has sparked a strong response from supporters, including Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, who confirmed he is representing the comedian and was present at the Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters shortly after the arrest.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Babu described the charges as “frivolous, fickle, limping and vexatious,” and accused investigators of denying Omondi bail at the station level.

“We are with Eric Omondi at Nairobi Area Regional Police Headquarters. Eric was arrested today at JKIA at 12.15PM,” Babu wrote. “Let’s meet in court on Monday and come prepared.”

Omondi himself broke the news earlier through his social media accounts, stating that he was picked up by a group of eight unidentified, non-uniformed men and that he had no information on his destination at the time.

“Just been arrested by a group of 8 Non Uniformed Men. I have no idea where we are headed!!!” he posted.

The case is expected to be mentioned in court on Monday as legal teams prepare for what is likely to be a closely watched hearing, given Omondi’s public profile and history of civic activism.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the specific charges that will be preferred in court.
