Ruto hands over land for FIFA-backed football center in Machakos

Kenya's football dreams received a major boost after President William Ruto handed over the deeds for land in Machakos that will host a state-of-the-art FIFA technical center.

The project, hailed as a game-changer for the future of Kenyan football, will serve as both a training hub for national teams and a talent incubation center for upcoming stars.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who was in Nairobi for the ceremony, described the new facility as a "beacon of hope and inspiration" for future generations of Kenyan footballers.

"This centre will prepare our national teams for international matches and tournaments, while also offering young players the chance to dream and work towards wearing the national colours," Infantino said.

President Ruto, a self-proclaimed football enthusiast, gifted the land to FIFA and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), underscoring his administration's commitment to strengthening the sport in the country.

"Football is a unifying game, and Kenya has the talent. This centre will ensure that talent is nurtured and developed to international standards," he noted.

The development comes hot on the heels of Kenya's successful hosting of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), which not only restored the country's reputation as a football destination but also proved its ability to manage major continental tournaments.

The finals, played at a packed Moi Sports International Center Kasarani, saw Morocco defeat Madagascar in front of football royalty, including CAF President Patrice Motsepe, FIFA dignitaries, and several African football legends.

The seamless organization of CHAN cemented Kenya's credentials and further justified the push for long-term investment in infrastructure.

FKF President Hussein Mohammed welcomed the Machakos centre, promising that his team would dedicate their full passion and effort to ensure the project succeeds.

He expressed confidence that the facility would raise the standards of Kenyan football, with support from FIFA and CAF.

With the technical centre on the horizon and the CHAN success fresh in memory, Kenya is positioning itself as a rising football powerhouse in Africa.

"This is a big step forward," Infantino concluded. "Kenyan football has a bright future, and together, we will build it."
