Call of Duty co-creator Vince Zampella dies in road accident

Vince Zampella, the influential video game executive and co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise, has died at the age of 55 following a car crash in California.

According to The Guardian, Zampella, who was the head of video game studio Respawn Entertainment and a co-founder of Infinity Ward, was involved in a fatal road accident on Sunday.

NBC Los Angeles reported that the crash occurred on the Angeles Crest Highway and was reported to the California Highway Patrol at approximately 12.45pm.

Authorities said the incident involved a single vehicle. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while a passenger was rushed to the hospital, where they were later confirmed dead.

Zampella's death has sent shockwaves through the global gaming community, where he was regarded as one of the most consequential creative leaders of his generation.

He played a central role in shaping Call of Duty, one of the most commercially successful video game franchises in history, with global sales exceeding 500 million copies.

He entered the video game industry in the mid-1990s, working on titles within the Medal of Honor franchise before co-founding Infinity Ward in 2002 alongside Grant Collier and Jason West.

Under his leadership, the studio developed some of the most acclaimed entries in the Call of Duty series, including Modern Warfare (2007) and Modern Warfare 2 (2009), games that redefined the modern first-person shooter genre.

In 2010, Zampella became embroiled in a high-profile legal dispute with publisher Activision over alleged unpaid royalties. Following his departure from Infinity Ward, he went on to establish Respawn Entertainment under Electronic Arts the same year.

At Respawn, he oversaw the creation of the Titanfall franchise and the hugely popular multiplayer title Apex Legends, further cementing his reputation as an industry innovator.

More recently, Zampella had been promoted to oversee the Battlefield franchise at EA Games. His leadership followed the release of Battlefield 6 in October, which received strong critical praise and was seen as a revival moment for the long-running series.

In a statement issued on Monday night, EA paid tribute to the gaming pioneer, saying:

"This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince's family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work.

"Vince's influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching. A friend, colleague, leader and visionary creator, his work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers around the world. His legacy will continue to shape how games are made and how players connect for generations to come."
