Tributes pour in for Nollywood legend Mr Ibu

The entertainment world is in mourning following the death of beloved Nollywood actor John Okafor, known to many as Mr Ibu.

He passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, due to cardiac arrest, as confirmed by Emeka Rollas, the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, on X.

 “I announce with deep sense of grief that Ibu didn’t make it. Mr Ibu suffered a cardiac arrest according to his manager of 24 years,” Rollas shared.

In December 2023, Okafor's health struggles were made public when his family announced he had undergone an amputation to address blood clotting and other health issues.

They shared, “Daddy’s cause of sickness is also not diabetes but he’s had constant clotting of the blood in his leg (diseased blood vessels) and other health challenges posing risk to his life, therefore the need for the amputation.”

The news of his death has led to an outpouring of tributes on X from fans, colleagues, and industry peers, all echoing the sentiment of a profound loss.

Lola Okunrin reflected on Okafor's comedic talent, saying, “John Okafor’s comedy was different...He had everything to give freely and make you laugh. His fatherly mix with Aki and Pawpaw was natural. An important figure in our childhood. Rest on Ibu.”

Den Kogei honoured Okafor's legacy, stating, “Rest in peace Mr Ibu. Thank you for all the years you entertained us John Okafor, you'll never be forgotten. Rip legend.” 

David Lewis echoed the same sentiments saying, “Rest in peace Mr. Ibu (John Okafor)- one of my favorite actors of all time. You brought so much joy and laughter onto so many faces. You made childhood fun. You were a gem? Fare thee well.”

Maina Kageni highlighted Okafor's contribution to Nollywood, saying “One of the best to have ever done it in Nollywood!!!! Rest In Peace John Okafor AKA Mr. Ibu. Thank you for the HUNDREDS of movies... and the hilarious dances as well!!! #RIPMrIbu #MrIbu,” while

Elvis Tunde recalled, “John Okafor was such a talented comic actor who brought so much laughter to our childhood. A Chelsea fan through and through. His movies will always be cherished. Rest on, Mr Ibu.”

Dr Yunusa Tanko offered condolences, “May the soul of Mr John Okafor AKA ( Mr Ibu ) rest in peace. Nigerians will miss him and his hilarious comedy. May God Almighty Allah gives the family the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.”
