Quiver, 1824, Cavali, 104 other entertainment hotspots face closure over noise pollution

Some of Kenya's most vibrant nightspots Quiver Lounge, 1824, Bar Next Door, Havana, Paris Lounge, and Cool Breeze Bar in Ruiru are staring at possible closure after the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) issued a stern directive over noise pollution.

Other entertainment hotspots include Clarion Hotel in Westlands and Eclipse Lounge at Tatu City.

In a public notice released on September 22, 2025, NEMA declared that many popular entertainment joints were flouting the 2009 Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution Regulations, citing a sharp rise in complaints from urban residents.

"This move follows persistent concerns over excessive noise disrupting communities, especially in urban areas such as Nairobi and Mombasa, where noise-related complaints have risen by 15% over the past year," NEMA stated.

The crackdown has placed bars, clubs, hotels, and eateries on the spot, with operators ordered to present compliance documents within seven days or risk closure and prosecution.

Required paperwork includes proof of company registration, an Environmental Audit report, and evidence of noise-control measures.

"Several facilities have been issued environmental restoration orders requiring them to provide compliance documents but the majority have failed to comply," the authority noted.

The looming shutdown has ignited heated debate online, with Kenyans questioning NEMA's selectivity.

On Facebook, Maureen Adalla argued, "We have so many noisy churches with their so-called keshas and early morning or evening worship. We have mosques that spew noise five times a day... and the only place mnaona kuna kelele ni clubs??? Clubs are supposed to be noisy but at least with soundproof."

Jackline Anyango countered, "Time to sanitize the nation."

For Nairobi's revellers and Kiambu's booming entertainment scene, the uncertainty is palpable. Many joints under the spotlight are household names for celebrity appearances, big concerts, and weekend turn-ups.
