Friends director James Burrows has died at the age of 85. He was behind some of America’s most iconic television comedy series, including Cheers and Will & Grace.
According to People, his family said in a statement that he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
“We celebrate the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of James ‘Jimmy’ Burrows, who passed away peacefully today, surrounded by his loving family. For more than five decades, Burrows was one of the most influential and beloved directors in television history. As a legendary director, mentor and creative force, he helped shape generations of comedy and brought immeasurable joy to audiences around the world,” the statement read.
For more than 50 years, Burrows was regarded as one of television’s most accomplished directors. He is credited with directing more than 1,000 episodes of hit shows, including The Big Bang Theory.
According to US media reports, he won 11 Emmy Awards as well as a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his work.
Stars from his shows have since shared tributes online. Will & Grace star Eric McCormack described him as a giant of television comedy who left a lasting impact on the industry.
“The 800 lb gorilla of television comedy for fifty years, he was beloved by everyone and has left not a mark but a footprint,” McCormack wrote on social media.
Lisa Kudrow, who played Phoebe on Friends, posted a brief tribute on Instagram, saying: “Thank you, Jimmy. I mean, for everything…”
According to the BBC, Burrows was born in Los Angeles in 1940 and grew up in New York. He first explored directing while studying at the Yale School of Drama before going on to help shape the hit 1980s sitcom Cheers.
An NBC spokesperson described him as a key behind-the-scenes force, saying the world of comedy had lost a great leader.
Fans also reacted on social media, with tributes highlighting his influence on television comedy. One user, Josh Kinley, wrote: “Burrows is truly a legend. He will be missed.”
