Don't snoop on your partner's phone, Ruto urges couples

President William Ruto has advised couples and lovers not to touch their partners' phones or access their social media space.

Speaking during dowry payment ceremony for Mathira MP Eric wa Mumbi and Murang'a Woman Rep Betty Maina last Saturday, Dr Ruto urged couples to respect privacy and avoid unnecessary interference in each other's personal space.

"Looking at your partner's social media and phones can easily make you go mad," he remarked, cautioning against the perils of giving in to rumours and highlighting the importance of focusing on one's own activities.

Attending the lively ceremony in Murang'a County, President Ruto pointed out the potential negative impact of scrutinising a partner's personal devices, warning that such behaviour could lead to psychological distress and unnecessary break-ups.

"Simu ya mzee achana nayo mama. Simu ya mama pia mzee achana nayo ndio muishi vyema," Ruto said.

The unique function attracted the participation of both the president and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua, with the latter taking the role of chief negotiator during the traditional wedding ceremony.

Ruto used the occasion not only to offer advice on relationships but also to call on couples to concentrate on building strong bonds while respecting the institution of family. He underscored the significance of trust and privacy in a relationship, encouraging couples to let the phone fulfil its intended role without unnecessary intrusion.

The love story between Wamumbi and Maina reportedly began during the campaign trail leading up to the August 2022 General Election.

The wedding ceremony drew influential political figures, including National Assembly Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro and Nairobi County Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri.

In a moment that captured hearts, MP Wamumbi proposed to Maina in April 2023, a joyous occasion she proudly shared on her social media platforms. Notable witnesses to the proposal included governors Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Susan Kihika (Nakuru), and nominated Senator Veronicah Maina.
