Kenyans demand arrest of police spokesperson after publication of false narrative on death of Albert Ojwang

Kenyans online are demanding the resignation of Police Spokesman Muchiri Nyaga after a post-mortem revealed that digital activist Albert Ojwang died from torture and strangulation.

The results, a stark contrast with an earlier police statement claiming he had fatally injured himself in custody.

Former Law Society of Kenya President Nelson Havi, speaking on Spice FM, said:

"We've seen innocent Kenyans abducted, detained, and even killed all for allegedly 'maligning' the names of powerful individuals... Now, it seems some officers believe they can carry out these violations on their own behalf, as if they are above the law."

Online users have echoed that sentiment.

One wrote on X: "This guy should be on the first lane, he must resign. We can't continue with such corrupt people killing us. Laws are laws."

Another added: "This statement disqualifies him from holding office over incompetence. The rest of the statement was fiction only they could believe."

In a statement dated June 8, 2025, Nyaga claimed that Ojwang', a rising X (formerly Twitter) influencer, had died after hitting his head against the wall of a police cell, following his arrest for allegedly "insulting" a senior government official online.

"NPS confirm that Albert Ojwang' was lawfully arrested by DCI detectives for false publications and placed in custody. While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall," the statement read.

Nyaga added that officers on duty rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

But those claims have been dismissed after a post-mortem conducted by government pathologists found that Ojwang' died from blunt force trauma, neck compression, and multiple soft tissue injuries, none of which were self-inflicted.

"There were multiple soft tissue injuries spread all over the body and the trunk and lower limbs. These were injuries that were externally inflicted," said pathologist Dr. Benard.

Graphic details from a viral video showing Ojwang's alleged body further contradicted the suicide claim, revealing severe swelling, bleeding from the nose and mouth, and injuries consistent with torture.

The revelations have intensified public anger, with calls growing louder for Police Spokesman Nyaga and Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat to step down.

Albert Ojwang's death has attracted immense interest, even as investigations continue. Human rights activists and political leaders have demanded answers and action on all found liable.
