Family disputes, mental struggles and drug use fuel rising suicide cases

As the world marks Suicide Prevention Month, family disputes, depression, and drug use have been identified as some of the main drivers behind the sharp rise in suicide cases.

The situation has been worsened by the financial crisis and widespread job losses, especially among low-cadre workers, according to the Naivasha Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cluster group.

The cluster group has raised a red alert over the increasing number of suicide cases among minors in Naivasha since the beginning of the year. John Kinuthia, chair of the group, revealed that over 40 cases have been recorded in 2025, with middle-aged men most affected.

Kinuthia said that, together with partners, they organised various activities in September to address the rising cases. Initial investigations indicate that school and family-related issues have significantly contributed to the surge. "We are concerned by the rising number of suicides, and have launched a campaign encouraging young people to speak out," Kinuthia said.

The group plans to hold sensitisation workshops in schools and workplaces as suicide cases continue across the town.

He noted a worrying trend where, unlike in the past when mostly adults took their own lives, minors are now increasingly involved, causing fear among parents. "We have seen a spike in suicides among primary and secondary students, which is very concerning," he added.Speaking in Naivasha, Kinuthia welcomed Parliament's move to decriminalise suicide, noting that it is a mental health issue that needs better support and understanding. "People who attempt suicide have mental health issues and should be loved and counseled as part of addressing these cases," he said.

This comes after a 42-year-old man took his life in County Council Estate, Naivasha, following a domestic dispute with his wife. During the incident, the wife, who works in one of the flower farms, escaped after the deceased tried to kill her with a knife.

Naivasha DCIO Isaac Kiama confirmed the couple had been in conflict forcing the man to travel to his rural home. "He returned seeking to resolve the differences with his wife, who declined, and in the process, he took his own life using a rope," he said.
