Max McKone broke down in tears after meeting marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge in New York

A New York man identified as Max McKone was overcome with emotion after coming face-to-face with his sporting hero, Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, during the New York City Marathon.

The ecstatic fan could not contain his excitement as Kipchoge ran past him alongside his teammates.

Fighting back tears, he turned to his wife, who was recording the moment, and said, “That was so cool… wow. Overwhelmed a little bit, but so awesome. For sure, a hero of mine.”

The emotional clip quickly went viral, moving thousands of viewers online.

“Watching him cry just made me cry,” wrote one fan, while another commented, “Hii nayo ni maajabu.”

Dutch long-distance runner Bjorn Koreman, who came across the viral video, arranged a surprise meet-up between Max and Kipchoge the following day, a promise he proudly fulfilled.

The meeting came just days before Kipchoge celebrated his 41st birthday.

Despite finishing 17th in his debut New York City Marathon, the race marked a historic milestone for the two-time Olympic champion as he officially completed all six World Marathon Majors, earning a coveted Six Star Medal and entry into the elite Six Star Hall of Fame.

Reactions poured in from fans across the world, many expressing pride and admiration. Some congratulated Kipchoge for his consistency and legacy, while others suggested it might be time for him to retire and mentor the next generation of runners.

To many, Kipchoge remains the undisputed G.O.A.T. of marathon running.

His journey from Kapsisiywa, Nandi County, where he was born in 1984, to global acclaim is nothing short of legendary. After breaking through in 2003 by winning the World Cross Country junior title and a silver medal in the 5,000m at the World Championships, he went on to dominate marathon running.

Kipchoge won Olympic gold in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, shattered the marathon world record with a 2:01:39 finish in Berlin in 2018, and made history in 2019 by breaking the two-hour barrier at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna.

Guided by his iconic mantra, “No human is limited”, Kipchoge continues to inspire millions around the world, including Max, the emotional fan whose dream of meeting his hero finally came true in New York.
