Five things that hinder God's guidance

Life is a series of choices that have consequences. We are constantly put in that place where we have to make choices. If you make bad choices, the consequences can be horrendous and if you make good choices, then you have good consequences and you will be successful.

Indecision is one of the things that constantly plague people and the greatest source of stress in life. When you do not know what to choose and the right way to go (indecisive), you will keep guessing. The antidote to indecision is to let God guide you.

“He leads me in paths of righteousness” (Psalm 23:3b). One of the marks of a child of God is that they are led by the spirit of God. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14).

What hinders us from being led by God? One is culture. You cannot follow the world’s culture and God at the same time.

“You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice” (Exodus 23:2).

One of the greatest challenges that Israelites had was that they wanted to be like other people. Yet Romans 12:2 says: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by renewing of your mind; that you may prove what good, acceptable and perfect will of God is. The will of God is good, pleasing and perfect.

“The world is passing away and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (1st John 2:17).

Two, is peer pressure. If you are going to follow God, you cannot afford to follow friends who are not led by God.  The reason you are not hearing God’s voice is because you are always hearing the will of your friends.

“Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God” (1st John 3:7). “He who walks with the wise men will be wise; but the companion of fools will be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20).

Third, looking for guidance from many sources. Some people look for guidance and direction from television talk shows, horoscopes, newspapers, witches or fake people who claim to have the powers to proclaim the future.

Going to other things to seek the will of God that does not include prayer and the Bible, is divination, witchcraft and sorcery!

Fourth, is being led by circumstances. Satan can manipulate circumstances and cause you to miss the will of God for your life. “When we had put to sea from there, we sailed under the shelter of Cyprus, because the winds were contrary” (Acts 27:4).

Circumstances do not detect the will of God therefore, you need to detach yourself from them. When the Bible says do not love the world or anything that is in it, it refers to values and systems of the world.

Fifth, is being led by feelings. You should be led by facts. Whether I feel like a Christian or not, I still remain a Christian. Whether you feel like praising God or not, the fact remains that you are still a child of God and Jesus is your savior. Feelings are fickle and temporary and emanate from the heart. “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked; who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).

How then does God want us to be? One, you must really crave to be led by the Good Shepherd. “I delight to do your will, O my God. And your law is within my heart” (Psalm 40:8). Two, you must be willing to obey his will. When you obey and do the will of God, he takes you to a higher dimension by revealing to you more and more.

Three, you must depend on the Word of God to guide you. Before you seek the voice, look for the Word because that is where his will is found. The Bible will lead, guide and speak to you. God will lead you on what to do, choose and make the right decisions for his name’s sake, so that he can receive praise and glory.
