Michelle Obama has paid a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, Marian Robinson, during a special reception marking the upcoming opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

Speaking at the event, the former first lady said her outfit carried deep personal meaning, revealing that her skirt featured a portrait of her mother. She noted that her husband, former President Barack Obama, had only just realised the detail.

“I am so proud of my husband. He's really messed up, I'm giving him some time, because this beautiful skirt that my stylist Meredith Koop picked out, that is a portrait, my favourite portrait of my mom, he didn't know it existed until just a few minutes ago,” Michelle, 62, said.

“I've had a few weeks to settle down in the beauty of this skirt, but it's messing him up for good reason. But Marian would have been so proud.”

The moment took place at Home Court, where the Obamas joined community leaders, supporters and partners involved in the development of the Obama Presidential Center, according to a press release.

For the occasion, Michelle wore a custom Acne Studios outfit, pairing a black T-shirt and belt with the standout skirt. The garment featured an image of her mother as a young woman.

Throughout her public life, Michelle has often used fashion as a form of expression, and the outfit served as a tribute to her mother, who played a central role in her life.

She also reflected on Marian Robinson’s relationship with Barack Obama.

“She was so proud of her son-in-law, and the man that he is, and has been to our family, always dreaming, probably way too big, but always pulling it off,” she said. “Thank you for doing this for the South Side of Chicago. I love you.”

Robinson died on May 31, 2024, at the age of 86, her family confirmed at the time.

Michelle has since spoken frequently about the lessons her mother taught her, including during a 2025 People Inc. event, where she reflected on a conversation in which Robinson reminded her that “life” passes quickly.

“That’s all she said, but what I got from that was even in her practical-minded way, that you’re never ready,” Michelle said.

The reception was held during the grand opening week of the Obama Presidential Center, which opens to the public on June 19.
