Eric Omondi exposes Kitengela woman who faked domestic abuse, conned Kenyans Sh1 million

When a video surfaced online showing a distraught mother, Joyce Nyabuti, being chased out of her home with her two children, Kenyans were moved.

The footage, which appeared to capture a cruel eviction by her husband, quickly went viral.

Among those touched was comedian-turned-philanthropist Eric Omondi, who shared the video with his fans while pleading for help on Joyce’s behalf.

Joyce, in the emotional clip, narrated that her marital woes stemmed from her children’s mental health challenges. “Shida ilianza na huyu mtoto… Aliniambia hawezi kaa na mtu anazaa watoto kama hawa,” she told Omondi, claiming her husband wanted nothing to do with the children.

Her friend Sarah, whom she described as a Good Samaritan, had allegedly taken her in after the supposed eviction.

Deeply moved, Omondi used his Sisi Kwa Sisi initiative to rally Kenyans to Joyce’s side. Within hours, well-wishers sent over Sh1 million to a mobile number shared under her name.

Omondi even announced plans to help her secure housing and start a business, praising Kenyans for their compassion.

While money continued to flow in, Eric says he noticed that the narrative was adding up which he had to do ‘due diligence’ and made a follow up when he discovered shocking details.

Joyce had allegedly teamed up with another woman she claimed was her sister to orchestrate the entire story.

The man who appeared in the viral video as her ‘husband’ was not even related to her just someone they barely knew, roped in to play the part for sympathy. He was paid Sh200 to act the part.

Even the children, one of whom was her friend’s son, had been used to elicit more pity.

The truth left Omondi stunned. “It is very sad that these individuals would use innocent children to try and scam Kenyans,” he said.

He quickly handed over the phone containing the contributions already loaded with Sh1 million to the police, Joyce and her accomplice were detained pending investigations.

Omondi later told his followers that Sisi Kwa Sisi prides itself on due diligence, which helped him unmask the deception before the money was lost. “The phone is in police custody. We are seeking guidance from Team Sisi Kwa Sisi on the way forward,” he wrote.

He also ensured that Joyce apologised to the online community for defrauding them.
