The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actor Amaechi Muonagor, who passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the age of 61.

His death was announced by Morris Monye, a popular social media influencer and the chairman of the Delta State Sports Association, who expressed his grief on the social media platform X.

Morris Monye paid tribute to Muonagor, saying, “Deeply heartbroken by the news of Amaechi Muonagor’s passing. He was a talented Nollywood actor whose presence on our screens was truly masterful."

“This tragic loss highlights the need for better healthcare in our country,” he added.

Amaechi Muonagor had publicly reached out for financial assistance to undergo a kidney transplant in India, as reported by Premium Times on March 19.

His health issues had been a concern since November 2023, when he first suffered a stroke.

By December, he had been diagnosed with kidney disease and diabetes on top of his earlier stroke.

The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) had also sought financial support for him during this time.

Muonagor's career spanned dozens of films, and he was particularly renowned for his role as the father in "Aki and Paw Paw," where he portrayed the parent of two mischievous teenagers.

His death comes shortly after the passing of another Nollywood giant, Mr. Ibu (John Okafor), who died earlier in the month on March 2, 2024.
