Amy Warighe: Dancing with a smile

You might have come across an energetic dancer busting some serious moves on TikTok while wearing an infectious smile.

This week, Pulse spent time with Amy Warighe to know where she draws her energy from.

Who is Amy?

I am a fourth-year Architecture student at the University of Nairobi. I am a Limuru Girls’ High School alumni, and I am mostly known as a dancer.

When and why did you start dancing?

I have been dancing for a long time. When I was younger, I danced in church. In high school, I was part of a dance group called Chosen. After high school, however, I did not find any avenues to support my dancing. My course study was a bit stressful and I needed to find an outlet, so I turned to dance. Initially, I used to go to the dance classes by Nerdy Parezo. Then I moved and I started going to Lite Dance 98. So far, I can say that it serves the purpose I wanted.

What's your take on dancing routines?

I prefer choreographed dancing styles. Learning the moves and doing them with a group of several dancers is artistic. I could do my choreographies but I have not started.

Where do you see your dance content taking you?

My long-term goal is to find a way to set myself apart from the normal dancing content. I would like to incorporate visual arts and dance, that is something that I am working on hoping it will come out soon. I don’t view dance as a job but more of a hobby. My other goal is to find more avenues to have fun while dancing.

How do you define your breakthrough in content creation?

When my videos went viral, I could not believe it, it was a pleasant surprise. The G bag na Jug dance video was the first one that Lite Dance ever posted of me and it went viral. I am grateful for the doors that were opened.

What was it like for you to trend on X?

Me trending on X felt like people were over-sexualising me. It was a bit uncomfortable but I did my best not to look at the comments. I do not like reading comments on my videos because some people say nasty things.

Your TikTok account has few videos of you, why is that?

My TikTok account is not empty. I have realised people are following the ones that I opened when I was young and forgot the password. I don’t know how to delete them. The official one is @warigzzz. That’s the one I am currently using.

How do you manage to do schoolwork and content creation?

I like to call myself a multifaceted human being. In primary school, I had to do a lot and still managed to pass my exams. So that is how I manage to keep up with my demanding school work and be consistent in my dancing.

What other hobbies do you have?

I am an artiste. I paint and draw, to be specific. I used to sing in high school but now I do that to pass the time; I especially like to sing in the shower. When I was in Form Two, I released a song.
