In a chilling courtroom revelation, Riziki Cherono, the widow accused of orchestrating the brutal murder of her Dutch tycoon husband, Rowenhorst Herman, allegedly staged her own kidnapping to mask her involvement in the crime.
Testifying before Mombasa High Court Judge Wendy Micheni, Corporal Richard Cheruiyot narrated how Cherono was found tied to her car's steering wheel, hooting repeatedly to attract attention.
A crowd gathered, and police were called to the scene.
Cherono claimed that armed robbers had stormed their luxurious Roco apartment in Shanzu, Mombasa, on July 29, 2021, and forced her to drive to the scene at gunpoint.
However, investigators believe this was a well-crafted ploy to divert attention from her alleged role in the gruesome murder of her husband and his security guard, Evans Pole Bokoro.
Upon arrival at the apartment, officers discovered Herman's lifeless body, clad only in underwear, lying in a pool of blood with his hands and legs bound and his mouth covered.
Blood splatters were visible on the pillow beside him, and his face was deformed.
According to Cheruiyot, Cherono screamed upon seeing her husband's body, which initially led him to believe she was an innocent victim.
However, further investigations revealed that she had instructed the apartment's caretaker, Khamis, to report the crime to the police.
Bokoro, the night guard, was found near the pool, struggling for breath. Cherono offered to rush him to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries before receiving treatment.
The prosecution contends that Cherono meticulously planned and facilitated the double murder, working alongside her co-accused, Tomothy Omondi.
Both have denied the charges and the case continues.
