Mama Gift: Thousands of TikTokers gather in Embu to support mother of boy with cerebral palsy

Kenyans in their thousands assembled at the Njukiri Showground in Embu over the weekend to rally behind Mama Gift, a single mother whose journey has moved hearts throughout the country.

Mama Gift, from Gathoge, has been caring for her son, Baby Gift, who suffers from cerebral palsy, chronic asthma, and cardiovascular complications.

Through emotional videos and posts online, she has shared her journey of sleepless nights, hospital visits, and the deep love that keeps her going, despite her financial struggles.

Her story, which went viral on TikTok and Instagram, sparked an outpouring of empathy that turned into a real-life movement of kindness.

What began as a digital cry for help became a national moment of compassion? Kenyans, particularly Gen Zs, traveled from across the country to Embu, bearing gifts, food, and words of encouragement.

The atmosphere at Njukiri was electric. Young people waved Kenyan flags, hoisted banners reading "We Stand with Mama Gift," and sang along to heartfelt tunes.

The air buzzed with unity; no politics, no sponsors, just pure humanity.

Videos circulating online showed crowds arriving on motorbikes, matatus, and in carpools, chanting and blowing vuvuzelas in celebration of Mama Gift's courage.

"This is the change we want. Well done and thank you. We can keep this going round the nation," wrote Ade William on Instagram.

Another user, Julia Muriithi, commented, "Kenya ni nchi yangu. God bless Kenya and quick recovery to baby Gift. God heals and thank you Kenyans."

This is not the first time Kenyans, especially the youth; have rallied behind someone in need. Earlier in the year, TikToker Kaluma Boy, born Vincent Kaluma, shared touching videos of his life caring for his ailing father in Othaya.

His videos showed him waking up before dawn to prepare porridge for his bedridden dad, harvesting tea to earn a few coins, and ensuring his father got sunlight every morning. With raw honesty and humility, Kaluma's clips spread across social media, capturing the hearts of millions.

Within days, Kenyans mobilized online under the hashtag #SupportKalumaBoy, leading hundreds to travel to Othaya with donations; food, medical supplies, and emotional support.

That outpouring of kindness became a blueprint for grassroots empathy, one that has now been echoed in Embu through the Mama Gift initiative.
