A friendly drinking competition among four friends at a local bar in Aldai Constituency, Nandi County, ended in tragedy after one of them died.
According to witnesses speaking to a local TV outlet, the group had visited an entertainment joint in Mugundoi village and decided to engage in a drinking challenge.
The rules were simple but strict.
Each participant was required to drink three bottles of alcohol consecutively without adding water.
Anyone who failed to complete the task would have to pay the entire bill.
However, during the third round of heavy drinking, 31-year-old Duncan Kipkemboi collapsed and died on the spot. His three companions, including his brother, were rushed to Nandi Hills County Hospital for treatment.
The group had reportedly been drinking elsewhere before arriving at the bar.
Confirming the incident, Nandi East Sub-county Police Commander Jeremiah Leariwallah said the owner of the bar had been arrested to assist with investigations.
“These gentlemen are reported to have engaged in a drinking competition which later turned tragic, killing one of them. We have taken samples of the alcohol for testing and the owner of the bar is helping us with investigations,” said Leariwallah.
A hospital official at Nandi Hills County Hospital confirmed that two of the survivors had since been discharged, while the third was still receiving treatment in stable condition.
The family of the deceased is now demanding justice, calling for a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding his death.
