Albert Ojwang's family formalises union with widow in traditional nyombo rite

The family of the late teacher Albert Ojwang’ has honoured his memory by paying bride price for his widow, Nevnina Onyango, fulfilling a wish he had expressed while alive.

The culturally significant ‘nyombo’ ceremony, a Luo traditional dowry rite, brought together relatives and community members in a vibrant celebration marked by song, dance and customary rituals.

The event formally recognised Nevnina as Ojwang’s wife in the eyes of both families and the wider community.

Elders from both sides presided over the ceremony, underscoring the importance of tradition, unity and respect for the deceased’s wishes.

Beyond formal recognition, the ceremony affirmed Nevnina’s place within her husband’s family while signalling continuity, dignity and cultural pride despite the loss.

She expressed gratitude to her late husband’s family for honouring his promise.

“A promise fulfilled even in absence. I’m deeply humbled and grateful to his family and friends for honouring our union. Love truly does not end, even in death. My heart is full of gratitude. I’ll always love you, Baba G,” she wrote.

For the occasion, she wore an off-shoulder green dress with black patterns, paired with a black corset and black heels, a look fitting for a traditional bride.

Ojwang’ was arrested at his home in Homa Bay County while having lunch with his family.

Police accused him of posting a derogatory statement about a senior officer and transferred him to Nairobi.

He died in custody on June 8, 2025, with police initially claiming he had hit his head inside a cell.
