Anger after masked police officers forcefully arrest photographer in Githunguri

Footage showing men believed to be plainclothes police officers forcefully arresting a photographer in Githunguri, Kiambu County, has sparked fury among Kenyans on social media.

In the clip seen by TNX Africa, the man is standing outside a building with other individuals when a masked police officer dressed in a black puffy half-coat, white T-shirt, black cap and khaki trousers approaches and asks what they are doing.

“Mnafanya nini hapa?” he said.

Immediately after the exchange, another officer dressed in a black blazer, cap and white sneakers drags the photographer by his clothes towards a police land cruiser.

The man continues recording the incident with a camera in his other hand. The officers are also seen carrying clubs.

Without resisting arrest, he is forced into the vehicle as another officer, not in uniform, joins in.

“Panda haraka,” the officer said.

A uniformed officer later joins the others at the back of the vehicle as they urge the photographer to move over.

“Ama unaona tunakuogopa. Songa huko,” an officer yelled.

The reason for the arrest remains unconfirmed, but social media reports allege the officers may have mistaken the photographer for a goon.

The video has since gone viral, drawing mixed reactions online.

On X, Brian Waswala wrote, “This day in age, record everything. Ndio wakikuja kukuchua, usipotee tu hivyo. Form ni ku-record.”

Another user, Inzeyi, added, “How Comes they just pin pointed him From the rest of the people?”

Jeruka Muthoni said, “Huyu ni police ako na mask na mti ya jembe? Ona tu venye anamvuruta. Sue them.”
