Migori woman in police custody after attacking husband over plan to marry second wife

Police in Migori County are holding a middle-aged woman for allegedly pouring hot water on her husband and cutting him with a panga because she suspected that he was planning to marry a second wife.

Awendo Sub-County Police Commander Mathias Pombo said the woman was in custody pending investigations.

“We are investigating the matter to establish what really happened as the victim is still in hospital,” Pombo said.

The woman is said to have attacked her husband on Sunday night by pouring hot water on him before grabbing a panga and cutting him in the head and arms, causing him serious injuries.

She is said to have been angered by her husband’s intention to marry a second wife.

The incident happened at Kadar Poche village, North Kanyamkago Location in Uriri Sub-County, Migori County.

According to the OCPD, the woman who is being held at Uriri Police Station, will be taken to court when investigations are complete.

The couple have reportedly been living together for ten years.

Pombo advised couples to seek family or professional help whenever they have problems in their marriages instead of taking the law into their hands.

He asked men who are being battered by their wives to come out and report their tribulations to the authorities.

“Gender Based Violence can affect both men and women. Men who suffer should come out and speak. They should not suffer in silence,” Pombo said.

He also urged women to speak up when they face gender-based violence in their homes.

The man is receiving treatment at Migori County Referral Hospital.
