Nairobi matatu driver arrested after viral video of touts dangling, performing dangerous stunts

A matatu driver has been arrested and charged after a viral video showed a tout hanging precariously and performing risky stunts from a 'nganya'.

In a statement shared on X, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) confirmed the arrest, describing the incident as "reckless and extremely dangerous."

"The stunt was reckless and extremely dangerous. Sudden braking, sharp turns, or acceleration can easily throw the passenger off balance, leading to a fatal fall," NTSA said.

The agency further urged passengers and conductors always to remain seated and use seatbelts.

"The driver was arrested, presented in court, and charged with various traffic offences. He was granted a cash bail of Sh100,000 or a court bond of Sh300,000," the post added.

The video showed a tout swinging from the passenger door of a speeding minibus, pulling action movie-style stunts as the vehicle hurtled downhill.

The arrest has drawn mixed reactions online, with some netizens questioning why the driver was targeted instead of the tout.

One asked: "Weuh dereva ameumia juu ya makosa ya mtu mwingine."

Another wrote: "Why was the driver arrested? He was just driving. Sometimes, and the word is sometimes... drivers don't know what's happening until they glance at the side mirror."

Alex Joe posted: "Why is that thing even on the roads? Isn't there a public transport policy defining what a PSV vehicle should be like?"

James Mwadeghu added, "These behaviours and tendencies go unchecked on a daily basis. The matatu industry is led by corrupt Saccos and enabled by corrupt law enforcement. Shida tupu!"

The incident comes amid worrying statistics on road safety in Kenya.

According to NTSA's April report, 5,856 people were involved in road crashes between 1 January and 31 March this year.

Of those, 1,139 lost their lives, 3,316 sustained serious injuries, while 2,693 suffered minor injuries.
