Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has faulted the Azimio la Umoja coalition over its plan to collect signatures, aimed at removing his boss, President William Ruto from office.

Gachagua who was speaking at a burial in Mathira constituency on Saturday, July 8, said that the 10 million signature collection plan is a waste of time and is not supported by law.

“They are saying they can remove President Ruto from office. Even if they collect 10 million signatures, where will they take them? To whom will they take them?” the DP posed.

“They were unable to stop him from becoming the president, how can they stop him now? Additionally, there is no constitutional provision for anyone to collect signatures against a sitting president, they are just wasting their time,” he added.

His remarks come a day after Azimio began a nationwide signature collection during the Saba Saba protests to remove President Ruto from office.

The exercise was launched at Kamukunji grounds by Odinga and dispatched its luminaries to various parts of the country to speed it up as they seek to collect the signatures by the end of the month.

According to Gachagua, instead of wasting time collecting signatures, the opposition should focus on preparing for the 2027 General Election.

“We are not going to be bothered by noise because that cannot stop us from doing what we are doing. They should know the election period is over and start preparing for the next one,” he said.

As per the constitution, a sitting president can only be removed from office by impeachment through Parliament or if incapacitated.
