A Kaloleni man who allegedly took advantage of a Kitale woman seeking financial help after she dropped out of school has been accused of rape.

This was after the woman, F.P, told Dominick Mutsotso, that she was an orphan who had stopped going to school.

Mutsotso is accused of intentionally and unlawfully forcing his way with the woman on the night of 7 and 8 February at his house in Kaloleni estate.

The victim, who was orphaned at the age of three, said she dropped out of school after the person who sponsored her informed her that they could no longer pay her fees.

The victim had to move out of the shelter house to find some work to do. A woman who took her with a promise to cater for her needs and fees, however, turned her into a house help.

That's when she met Mutsotso on Facebook who friend requested her. She said they became friends and when he asked her what she was doing, she informed him that she was working to earn school fees.

She said he promised to help her pay the fees if she travelled to Nairobi from Kitale for a discussion. She travelled to Nairobi after he sent her bus fare.

She said that when she arrived, the man picked her up at the bus stop and took her to his house where he assaulted her. In the morning he said he was going to work.

The victim's phone was low on battery. He took her to a shop where she would charge, claiming he did not have a cable. He left her there, saying he was late for work. She went back to the man's house but was shocked to learn that he had locked her out. With nowhere to go, she sat outside. That was when the landlady passed by and she interrogated her. F.P told her she had been raped.

The matter was reported at the Makongeni Police Station, leading to Mutsotso's arrest. He initially pleaded guilty to the charge only to make a U-turn after he learnt of the consequences.

Chief Magistrate Bildad of Makadara law courts granted him a bond of Sh500,000. The matter will be mentioned on March 28 for pre-trial.
