CCTV captures panga-wielding thugs violently attacking, robbing Mombasa resident

A chilling CCTV video has captured the moment a machete-wielding gang in Mombasa violently pounced on unsuspecting passers-by in a late-night robbery that has left netizens shaken.

The footage, which has since gone viral, unfolds in cinematic fashion just minutes before midnight.

A boda boda rider carrying two casually dressed pillion passengers is seen pulling up near a residential gate.

One of the men pretends to knock at the gate, but suddenly pulls a machete from his denim shorts and ambushes a couple walking nearby.

As the man in the couple screams and attempts to flee, he is chased down by the second thug, with the motorbike trailing closely behind.

The gang quickly corners him, striking him with the machete before demanding he surrender his phone and M-Pesa PIN.

"Weka PIN ya M-PESA!" the men shout as they rummage through his belongings.

"Ukikosa utaumia!" they threaten, warning him to comply or suffer severe consequences.

A resident emerges to confront the attackers, but the gang accuses the victim of "being involved with other people's wives" before forcing him to lie down and flogging him.

They then smash the CCTV camera before escaping into the night.

The location where the incident happened is not immediately verifiable from the video, but online reports point to an area known as Leisure, in the coastal town of Mombasa.

The harrowing clip has since sparked widespread outrage online, with Kenyans calling for urgent security interventions.

"Ooh my God watu walipeleka UTU wapi, this is Hell!!" one distressed user lamented.

Another recounted a similar brush with the same gang, "I was once in this kind of situation, I had no money, they almost finished me. Ni God aliniokoa after a driver lit his full lights and scared them away."

"This is so traumatizing, oh God I hope the guy is safe," another added.

The incident has reignited concerns about the resurgence of Mombasa's notorious "panga boys" gangs, even as President William Ruto concluded a development tour of the coast.

The Head of State launched the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service in Miritini and inspected the Nyali VOK affordable housing project just a day after the attack.
