Viral video shows Shimo La Tewa prison warders brutally assault patient seeking treatment

A disturbing viral video has emerged showing arrogant prison warders at Shimo La Tewa in Mombasa accused of assaulting a man who had allegedly gone to seek medical services at their dispensary.

In the clip, the man recording is heard bitterly confronting the officers over the assault of his brother.

"Mbona mmepiga brother yangu?!" he shouts.

One of the officers arrogantly retorts: "Mkinishika mtanipeleka wapi?"

The video then shows the young man, bloodied and lying helplessly on the floor, his clothes and the ground around him stained with blood.

"Is this right jamani?" the man recording asks, before making a direct appeal to President William Ruto.

"Ruto, hapa ni Shimo La Tewa. Askari wamekimbia wote baada washamuumiza," he says, moments before the video ends.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, but unverified reports online suggest the victim was attacked after going to seek treatment at the prison dispensary.

Authorities are yet to issue a statement.

The video has sparked outrage online, with Kenyans condemning the warders.

One Facebook user asked, "He didn't even wrong anybody. Why not just say no and send him to a hospital?"

Another, however, cautioned against rushing to conclusions: "Many a time we judge first out of emotions. It's good to listen to both parties before making any assumptions."

Some compared the Shimo La Tewa dispensary to others linked to prisons across the country. One user noted: "In Korinda prison in Busia county there's a dispensary within the prison compound and it's open to the public. The county government manages it - prison only provided the buildings."

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of police and prison officers, following the recent death of 26-year-old Simon Warui in Mombasa police custody.

Warui was found dead in a cell after what police described as a fall in the toilet. A post-mortem, however, revealed he died from neck fractures, oxygen deprivation, and other injuries, including a broken hand.

The Law Society of Kenya has since taken up the case, demanding accountability.

"This raises grave concerns," LSK President Faith Adhiambo said in a statement, confirming that the society had appointed a lawyer to represent Warui's family and push for justice.

Investigations into his death are ongoing, with no arrests or prosecutions so far.
