Karua, Kioni, Munya board motorbikes after police blocked their motorcade

The National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) party leader Martha Karua was on Wednesday forced to board a Boda Boda in Meru Town.

This was after police officers attached to the anti-riot unit blocked her motorcade from leaving the town.

Karua was in the company of former Agriculture CS Peter Munya and Forer Ndaragua MP Jeremiah Kioni.

Reports indicate that the political leaders were trying to access Gatimene Gardens Hotel, for a press briefing.

On arrival, they found police officers patrolling the hotel and decided to change the briefing area to Muthaara, Meru County.

The trio boarded their vehicles to depart for the other side of Meru town but this became unsuccessful after police blocked the procession.

It is then that they rushed to the nearest Boda Boda stage with a few members of their security team and made it to Muthaara.

At Muthaara, Karua, Kioni and Munya continued with their signature collection initiative but the activity was cut short by police officers who lobbed teargas canisters and dispersed the crowd.

During an interview with Spice FM on Monday, Karua urged Kenyans to support the signature collection campaign terming it "a powerful symbol of disapproval against the current regime".

She also added that as written in the constitution, Kenyans have the power to turn the current situation of high cost of living around mostly by avoiding the taxation.

“Article 1 of the Constitution states that sovereignty resides with the citizens of Kenya. This has been a constant message, and we are urging the people to exercise that sovereignty either through elected representatives or directly," Karua stated.
