Lovebirds turn bushes into lodges

Lovebirds who have turned Migori bushes into green lodges have become a nuisance, Oruba Sub-location Chief Charles Ouma has said. The chief said attempts to arrest the lovebirds who have turned a small natural forest at Girango in Migori town, Suna West Sub-County have often been futile as they usually escape deeper into the forest.

Not even the fear of deadly snakes appears to deter some couples from turning the site into a love-making site.

“Attempts to arrest them have been futile as they usually run away. It is a bushy place and we fear chasing them inside the bush,” Mr Ouma said.

He said since they launched a crackdown to arrest the love birds, the love birds have stopped frequenting the area in the daytime and only show up in the evenings between 5 pm to 6 pm. Ouma pointed out that the lovebirds have been hiding and only coming to the area in the late evening.

Disappearing acts

“It is like they have informers. Whenever they hear that we are going for them they disappear,” the chief said.

He explained that the lovebirds used to visit the bushy areas of the forest which is near River Migori last year but had stopped after being warned.

Ouma however said that since the beginning of this year, a fresh wave of lovebirds emerged and they have become too much. He revealed that they have been finding used condoms and cigarette litter in the bush.

According to the chief, the lovebirds that have turned the bush into lodging come from as far as Suna East Sub-County as others come from within the area.

He pointed out that the indecent acts conducted by people aged between 30 and 40 have painted the community in the area in bad light. The forest is located one kilometre from Migori town.

The chief said despite the challenges, they will continue with their crackdown. Ouma vowed to have anyone caught charged in court as he urged members of the public to aid in the arrest of the lovebirds.
